Chapter Twelve
The Shining One
558AD Loch Kilmorkill
A whole summer had passed and then a prolonged autumn. Taranâs mind reeled with the injustice and frustration from being denied his inheritance. Did Oengusâ treachery not call to be challenged? What could he do about it from so obscure a place? Yet he also knew that revenge was inappropriate as a pilgrim, leading to a mounting guilt for entertaining such thoughts.
âWhat ails you?â asked Girom.
âOh, just a bad dream!â he replied dismissively.
âIt seems to have troubled you. Maybe it is a warning?!â
âYes, maybe.â
âSpeak to our druid about it â he is a good interpreter of dreams,â suggested Girom, turning to go fishing.
Speaking to a druid was the last thing on his mind. Had he not had enough of druids for a lifetime? Besides, he had a new King; although one who seemed quiet of late.
Several times recently he had awoken from the same dream with great frustration and consternation. Aleine Brona was the one person who knew how to soothe his troubles and so he started to hint, rather than tell, about some of his previous life, keeping it under a veil. He noted how she enjoyed the mystery of his origins; and liking to keep this secret between them, it provided him with the soothing opportunity to be with her. Aleine Brona could empathise, although unable to understand everything. He became careless in his prayer habits, spending more time talking with her, speaking less to his King. When at last he noted this, it bothered him. But his conscience was muted by his growing fascination in this girl in the early flush of womanhood. Every day, he became conscious of some new aspect of her person that intrigued him. He noted too, that she made greater efforts with her appearance, in contrast to the image she had presented when suspended in the shrub, so emaciated and unkempt that the sight of her had repulsed him.
I have not been ruing the loss of Alpia from the thieving hand of my cousin lately, but I do feel cheated of my inheritance, he observed one day when gathering firewood. I cannot recall exactly what Alpia looks like anymore. But with Aleine Brona, I can describe her every detail!
What if he could just be at peace with the situation? Had he not given up on the quest of getting his kingdom back after his flight from Dindurn? That was all in the past, as Fillan had insisted. The transition at Dindurn had prepared him for a new life, specifically led by Fillanâs vision to this remote coast where he experienced his spiritual renewal. Void of further guidance, Aleine Brona offered great consolation after all that he had lost; her simple, homely wisdom inviting him to build a new life with her, had strong appeal.
Yet the haunting dream would not leave him, with such an indignation growing within him that it made him question why he was at Giromâs household and he began to wonder why his life appeared to come to a halt in this place.
